LAMBETH ONLINE CATALOGUE OF PRINTED BOOKS

LPL USERS' GUIDE: HORIZON INFORMATION PORTAL (iPAC)

The Dynix Horizon Information Portal replaces WebPAC which previously supported the Library’s online catalogue of printed books. Both the company and product names have recently changed from Epixtech to Dynix and iPAC to Horizon Information Portal. The names and logos within the online catalogue will be updated at the next release.

Please use the LPL Users' Guide to get the most out of the Catalogue:

IMPORTANT NOTICES TO READERS

Although the Library hopes that the Horizon Information Portal (iPAC) will eventually offer the same level of functionality and display as the Reading Room OPAC, this is unfortunately not possible at present. We hope that new releases will solve some of the problems but in the meantime, please be aware of the following [as at 1 July 2003]:-

A. Search problems under some major headings (any with round bracketed subheadings).

The headings and subheadings file correctly in the Browse Lists but cannot be accessed directly by entering the full heading + subheadings. This is most apparent in the Corporate Author Index.

For example:- If you want to search for a subheading under the Church of England  such as ( Liturgy and ritual ), you have two main choices:-

  1. Enter Church of England with no subheading in Corporate Author and scroll through several screens until you arrive at the Liturgy and ritual subheading. [This is probably the simplest method.]
  2. Use the Keyword Index and enter the terms Church, England, Liturgy, Ritual. This will bring up the works in which you are interested, but will also bring up much additional and unwanted material. You may have to add words to refine your search. [Useful for more specific subheadings.]
[N.B. This problem does not occur in the Subject Index where the Browse List is arranged in a less hierarchical manner.]

B. Special Lambeth customisations have transferred only partly to HIP.

  1. The Bible Sort List should arrange the texts of all the Books of the Bible in canonical and not alphabetical order (so that Genesis for example should file in front of Exodus). In the OPAC all biblical texts conform to this Sort. In HIP only biblical texts as main not subsidiary entries conform to this Sort, and at present file in descending order (i.e. Exodus in front  of Genesis. [We hope that improvements can be made to this Sort.]
  2. The Uniform Title Sort List should arrange all the titles under one heading (author or corporate author) in an alphabetical list interfiling uniform titles and ordinary titles.  In HIP all the titles file first, then all the uniform titles second.
  3. The Series Sort List should arrange all volumes in a series in ascending numerical order. In HIP the volumes file in descending “decimal” order. [This has been identified as a bug which we hope will be fixed at the next release.]
  4. The Bibliographical Reference Number Sort (STC/Wing/ESTC) files in descending instead of ascending order.
  5. The Classmark Sort files “decimally” instead of numerically (e.g. H1000 will file ahead of H99).

C. The online iPAC User’s Guide and Help screens have not been customised.

The online iPAC User’s Guide and Help screens are expected to be revised at the next release. They will then be customised to Lambeth requirements. They may usefully be accessed but bear in mind that some functions and terminology will not relate to the Library’s system and catalogue. For example Lambeth does not set up individual user accounts. This in turn limits certain facilities such as My List.

SORT LISTS

Lists of summary records display in an unsorted order.
If your search has produced several records it will be useful to sort them into a defined order.
Use the drop-down Sort menus in the various Searches to select your option.

1. Title, Author, Publication Date. (Useful for the works of one author)

MY LIST

You can access this facility by clicking on to the My List button from the top of the Welcome Page and various search screens.
It is primarily aimed at lending libraries or libraries with an established readership using personal accounts. Most of the functions of My List are therefore not used in the Lambeth system. Ignore the arrow to the right of My List: this is a login for personal accounts only.

However you can use My List to create bibliographies:-

Click on to the tab Add to my List in any summary or full bibliographical record.
You can see how your list is growing by clicking on to the My List button at any point and can remove any item by clicking on to the Remove tab.
You can print out the list by using your own PC's printing facilities.

The list will not be saved when you close the internet session, but you can save it for yourself beforehand by using your PC to save the list as a Text File.

N.B. My List provides summary records only. If you wish to have a copy of the full bibliographical record you will have to print the screen using your own PC's facilities.

HELP

You can access this facility by clicking on to the Help button on the Welcome Page and most other screens.
It provides information on the function of the screen from which you accessed Help.
It also provides access to the online iPAC User's Guide.
These Help screens and User's Guide provide useful information but will not be customised for Lambeth use until after the next HIP upgrade.
